When Ryan Lawhon unveiled his new artistic project Mating Ritual last month, echoes of his previous work within Pacific Air were still extremely prominent in both his new tracks Toxins and Game. Now three singles in, new cut Moonlight offers something a little different to anything Lawhon’s ever created before, but commendably sounds bang on-trend in comparison to some of the best new music we’ve heard in 2014. Beyond its slightly annoying opening few seconds, Moonlight manifests into a sexy, hook-laden synth gem that nods towards an impressive cross-breed of pop, indie, electronic and R&B sub-genres. In its moorish four and a half minutes we are treated to smouldering verses, anthemic chorus’ and Ryan’s terrific vocals, a formula that has seen me (and most likely you too) hovering above the repeat button all evening.
